IF: Vanity (or Two For The Price of One)

I've started my super exciting, yet slightly scary adventure into The Sketchbook Project 2012, a worldwide touring art show. My book's theme is Nothing New, so by the end of January, this sketchbook will be filled to the brim with drawings of everyday things. Since it's always a little daunting to start a new book, I doubled up with this week's Illustration Friday topic: Vanity. (Because it's a vanity. See what I did there?)

IF: Silent

What better way to keep a dinosaur quiet than to give him a cookie? This guy is my entry for this week's Illustration Friday subject. He's also part of some work I did for ARC poetry magazine.

IF: Stripes

Illustration Friday topic: Stripes
The Jiggly Zebra was given to S when she was a baby. He's been drooled on, chewed and thrown around. Now that she's a bit older, he enjoys a somewhat more lavish lifestyle of being carried around in a blankie, fed pretend food and drawn on with markers (sorry, Zeebs. You win some, you lose some).

Drawing TV

As I sat watching TV last night, all I could think about was the giant box of Halloween candy in the cupboard. But it's still unopened, and I think we all know what opening that box would mean. It would put into place a series of disastrous events, culminating in the inevitable purchase of probably six more giant boxes of Halloween candy, which would no doubt be gone before October 31st. So instead, I tried to occupy my brain with a pen and sketchbook. It worked...kind of. Two handfuls of chips took the fall, but the giant box of candy remains intact. Success!

Today's super quick drawing

Sometimes it's just a Giant Marshmallow In A Giant Mug Of Hot Chocolate kind of day. You know?

A little drawing for an idea I'm working on. Names removed to protect the innocent. And the not so innocent.

Working for (packing) peanuts

I recently did some work for a friend of mine who runs a Sing, Dance and Sign class for toddlers. I learned a ton during this project, including the importance of having a graphic designer you can message for real-time advice at midnight. Thanks, Heather, I owe you one.

The cool thing about this? This toddler-class-running friend is pretty awesomely talented in many artistic areas. So we worked out an exchange of services, which means I'm getting a great big surprise package of fabulous in the mail soon. Sweet.

I was doing a quick drawing of the Beloved Toy Barn and suddenly I feel a little head peering over my shoulder. She looked over my drawing, looked at the barn, and then looked me right in the eye with a certain familiar look that I couldn't quite place. Then she took her crayon and very meticulously added to my drawing, patted me on the arm, and walked away. It took me a while to realize I'd just been critiqued. I hope I got an A for effort, at least.

Old friends, new book

from Animal ABC by Jessica and Ross Flick
We hung out with a nice young man and his mama today. It was good to spend some time with them, and I'm not just saying that because they brought us a gift. This little cloth book is handmade and is my artistic inspiration for the day. Amazing (quilted?) illustrations and different animals than the usual "cat, dog, elephant". Plus? Un-rippable pages. Brilliant.

Big plans

Project Draw (almost) Every Day is still going strong:
It's practice, really. I have some exciting ideas for raising money for organizations that are important to me. Simply, I draw something for you, you donate what you can to a designated charity. I'm trying to figure out the logistics/legalities of it right now and I'm realizing I need to keep it very simple. But I think this can work.
